In a little over a week’s time, it will be the Christmas in Rye Festival 2022. Whether you love it or loathe it, December 25 is inexorably charging towards us.
Our skyline is dominated by the beautiful St Mary’s church and our streets are filled with wonderful independent shops. If you’re a believer, you will be filled with joy. If your first thought is always for others, you’ll make an extra trip to Rye Foodbank on Wednesdays, to deliver some festive treats. If you’re a trader, you will have been planning for this since the summer. If you’re a grandparent, you’ll be juggling between postal strikes and train strikes. And if you’re a parent, your house has probably already been filled with glitter and tinsel since bonfire night. There really is no escaping it.
On Friday, December 2 70 shops will be staying open until 8pm. There will be music in the streets, Prosecco and mulled wine all around the town and all our fabulous restaurants. It’s date night with a little Christmas shopping thrown in.
On Saturday, December 3, it’s a family day with Santa’s grotto, storytelling, high street races, a penguin trail, Sir Jollylot’s Lucky Dip, music and a procession to St Mary’s for carols. Once again there will be many opportunities for festive food and drink, including the Wild Flame pizza truck.
Rother District Council will be playing its part too. Their car parks in Rye will be free from 4pm on Friday, December 2, as well as on Saturdays December 3, 10 and 17.
