The Strand saw an unusual sight on Saturday September 13th with a very large tugboat moored at the quayside. The Falmouth registered tug from Cornwall was seeking shelter and resting after delivering barges full of material being used in the repair of Hastings pier, expected to reopen in Spring 2015. Most of the pier was severely damaged by fire in 2010, but the substructure survived. The pier had been severely damaged before by a storm in 1990. Over £500,000 has been raised by issuing shares and the balance of the £14M restoration is coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The pier was a Grade 2 listed building.
