Every four years or so another fitness craze comes along, normally originating from the United States and after a while taking off in the UK.
Now PiYo has crossed the pond and come to town and is proving extremely popular here in Rye. So what is PiYo?
PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. The speed is cranked up and claims to deliver a fat-burning, low-impact workout that leaves the body looking long, lean, and well defined. There are no weights and no jumps involved.
The recommended PiYo diet consist of breaking food down into five groups: primary vegetables, secondary vegetables/grains, fruit, protein and healthy fats. Recommended foods include scrambled eggs, oats, tuna, steak, brown rice, chicken, salad and vegetables.
The PiYo instructor at the Rye Leisure Centre is Lindsey Hynes, who has been working at the Centre for five years and is the Studio Co-Ordinator and Fitness Manager.
I asked her what she felt attracted people to this workout. “Some people find yoga too slow and have difficulties holding slow moves and positions for a long duration,” she said. “PiYo is set up to attract people who want to work out to a session that is similar to yoga, however, moving and holding to music at a fast pace.”
