It isn’t unusual for swarms of visitors to make their way up Conduit Hill over a sunny May bank holiday. But these day trippers were unusual, in that they had six legs and were looking for a new home. Drinkers in Olde Worlde Wines on Cinque Ports Street noticed thousands of bees massing on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, someone in the bar knew a local “bee man” who came along with his special box.
The bees seemed to be happy with their new accommodation and duly went inside. Bees traditionally will look for hollow trees in which to create their hive, but these are in shortening supply. If you would like to provide a home for bees, without taking on the responsibility of honey harvesting, consider buying a bee house from Bees for Development, a charity which promotes sustainable beekeeping to combat poverty. They support beekeepers in regions which are good for bees, biodiversity and people.
