Simon Aylett, the landlord of The Plough in Udimore, will set off on his bike ride to Sicily on Saturday morning to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

It’s a 2,000 mile journey from Rye to Syracuse, the city at the southern end of Sicily, which Simon used to visit on holiday with his parents. 56 year old Simon will be towing a specially constructed Velopod that will be his home for the next two months. The pod has a sleeping room, kitchen and storage space for a loo tent, with solar panels on the roof and kitchen door.

Simon, who has been fighting prostate cancer for the past five years, will be updating his blog periodically so that you can follow his journey. He will head off from the Butter Market at 9am on Saturday September 1 accompanied by friends and fellow cyclists some of whom will escort him all the way to the ferry at Dover. Anyone who wants to join in the great British “bike off” is more than welcome to cycle with Simon for as far as they can manage, and non-cyclists will also be welcome to cheer him on his way.

Prostate Cancer UK promotes awareness of the disease and invests in research projects to stop men dying from prostate cancer through improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention and support. Anyone wishing to make a donation to Prostate Cancer UK can do so at www.justgiving.com/Simon-Aylett or directly through the charity’s website .
