Rye’s former Town Crier 87-year-old Rex Swain became an Honorary Freeman of the Town last week, September 10, both for his 19 years service as Crier and his contribution to the heart of the town.

Proposing him, former Mayor Cllr John Breeds said Rex, with his engaging and wonderfully outgoing manner “has been the supreme ambassador for Rye way above the call of duty.

“There must be many thousands of people throughout the world whose cherished photographs of him continue to be the ultimate advertisement for our fabulous historic town.”

Rex has lived in Rye for 69 years. When he was 18 he was representing Rye as captain of the famous “Rye Aces” cycle speedway team – and he has a constant stream of anecdotes covering his life since.

Rye’s new Town Crier, Paul Goring, continued the compliments to Rex (extremely loudly) in the Town Hall garden when the Mayor Cllr Michael Boyd unveiled a plaque on the wall commemorating Rex’s work.
