Talks to remember two world wars

This year, Remembrance Day, Remembrance Sunday and the centenary of Armistice Day 1918 all fall on the ‘eleventh day of the eleventh month’.
Each November, we stand in respectful silence in tribute to those who exchanged their lives for our peace and freedom.
However, as time goes by, the numbers of survivors from these conflicts dwindle. And each new generation moves further away from hearing personal stories of how the war affected everyone’s lives.
Northiam & District Historical & Literary Society is proud to present two talks in November that retell some of these special stories and remind us of the courage and dedication shown by ordinary people during wartime.
Faces from the Front on Tuesday, November 6 is particularly poignant as it was the 1914 – 1918 war that demanded a swift response to the huge numbers afflicted with severe facial injuries. The speaker, Andrew Bamji, spent many years researching the first world war medical records in Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and will use this work as a basis for his talk.
The Burma Boys on Tuesday, November 20 moves on to the second world war and the invasion of Burma (now Myanmar) by Japanese occupation forces in December 1941. It is the story of a member of a largely forgotten contingent that fought in the longest British land campaign of the second world war. Barnaby Phillips’ presentation, based on his book Another Man’s War, is military history as experienced by a young boy and recorded by an award-winning journalist.
Both presentations will take place at Northiam Village Hall, Frewen Close, TN31 6RA on the above dates at 7.30pm – 9pm. Guests are welcome for a £3 fee. Further information is available at https://www.ndhls.co.uk/
