Rye Town FC, the current holders of the ESFL Premier Travel Chauffeurs Challenge Cup, faced Hawkhurst for a place in the quarter finals of the competition on Saturday November 24.
Following a thrilling 3-3 draw a fortnight ago, expectations were high for another exciting encounter in this second round cup tie and the two teams did not disappoint.
Town took a single goal lead into the half time break with a goal from Charlie Stevens and in the 62nd minute Stevens added a second to put the home side two goals to the good. However, as in the previous meeting Hawkhurst fought hard and replied in the 64th minute with a penalty making it 2-1. With a minute of normal time left Hawkhurst drew level at two apiece and the game appeared to be going into extra time. But the holders were having none of this, sixty seconds later in the in the 90th and final minute, Sammy Foulkes scored a decisive goal putting Town through, winning a dramatic finale 3-2.
Town’s man of the match award went to Charlie Stevens and the match was sponsored by the Mermaid Inn, Rye.
In the quarter final Town will meet Northiam 75 I who saw off J.C Tackleway by 3 goals to 2 in their second round clash.
This Saturday December 1 Rye Town FC entertain Bexhill Town at Rye Rugby Club in the league, kick off is at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and support them, the club bar with be open with refreshments for all. The game will be sponsored by Pikes Laundry Services Ltd.
