What a wonderful way to get into Christmas this year. Another outstanding performance from Michael Wooldridge on Rye’s Wurlitzer organ, accompanied by the Cranbrook Town Band.

Despite competing with Aled Jones at St Mary’s and various other events that evening, the concert drew a crowd of well over 100, who enjoyed Michael’s medleys of Christmas music interspersed with numbers by the band. Playing brass favourites as well as a very uptempo version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and Thriller, the brass band bought the flavour of Christmas as the audience joined in with a number of carols.

With his incredible energy, Richard Moore compered the evening, which helps to raise funds for the Rye Wurlitzer Academy, training young people to perform on the cinema organ. We heard several students old and new to the instrument as well as two seasoned student performers who sang beautifully with Michael accompanying.

It is with great thanks to Michael, Richard and all the team (including the friends of the Academy who work quietly behind the scenes to organise raffles, mulled wine and mince pies) who give so tirelessly to support this incredible institution that is unique to our town. We look forward to a full programme of concerts in 2019 from Michael, his prodigies and guest artists.
