Subterranean Sussex – the story continues..
Stewart Angell proved to be not only a talented author but also a skilled raconteur at a previous Northiam Hist & Lit Society event. He returns to expand his Subterranean Sussex theme to embrace the 45-year post-world war two period known as the Cold War. The most infamous example being the standoff between the USSR and the USA.
Britain’s reaction to the Cold War was to establish a Civil Defence Corps of trained civilian volunteers. They would mobilize and take control in the aftermath, running what was left of the country from underground systems of tunnels and bunkers established in secret locations countrywide.
So, what became of these concrete and steel structures when the Soviet Union was formally dissolved in December 1991 and the icy relationship between the USSR and USA thawed?
Come along for an update from Stewart; tonight’s venue is neither secret nor underground!
