The fabulous JAM on the Marsh multi-arts festival is back for 2019 with some spectacular, quirky and beautiful events.
The festival takes place around Romney Marsh and its medieval churches from July 4-14. It includes music, exhibitions, children’s events, theatrical performances, poetry recitals and a churches tour (covering New Romney, Old Romney, Brenzett and Fairfield).
One highlight is likely to be Jon Foreman’s beach sculpture, pictured above, which will take place each day of the festival on the sands at Dymchurch. These can be seen from the seawall at the Hythe end of Dymchurch beach opposite Sycamore Gardens (TN29 0LA). These transient artworks will be washed away each day by the sea, creating a blank canvas to be filled again the following day. Jon Foreman is the first Artist in Residence at JAM and his works are free to view.
The King’s Singers are another popular attraction. This sextet have been performing worldwide for more than 50 years and have a large international following. They will appear at the intimate venue of All Saints, Lydd on July 5. Tickets are £18, though under-18s are free.
Sabotage theatre returns on July 13 (7:30pm) and July 14 (4pm) at St George’s, Ivychurch. This horse-drawn company uses puppets, masts and live music to present “We are not Shellfish”, a coming-of-age story where the narrators include a talking rucksack, a goldfish and an octopus. Their work is always moving and thought-provoking.
This is just a small taster of what is on at JAM on the Marsh. To see the rest of the eclectic and inspiring programme and to book tickets, check the events page.
