The 2019 Sussex Heritage Trust Awards, now in its 21st year, saw a record number of winners, including several from the Rye area.

RX Architects, based in Rye, achieved an award in the Small-Scale Residential category for a newly built beach house at The Suttons in Camber. The judges described this project as  “very inspiring that made very good use of the site, with excellent appreciation of challenges of harsh environment – a functional family space, maximising the incredible views”.

RX Architects also won another highly commended certificate for a contemporary three-bedroom house at Beckley near Rye, following the demolition of a small 1920s bungalow. “The highly sustainable family home was designed to read as a cluster of buildings, typical of sporadic rural development of agricultural buildings,” said the award citation.

Dr John Godfrey, chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust commented: “The increase in entries this year, from 76 in 2018 to 98, clearly underlines the regard and prestige which the awards scheme now commands, across the whole of Sussex, including Brighton & Hove, and much further afield.”
