Saturday Night fever

In March this year, St Mary’s Community Centre in Lion Street, famed for its regular exhibitions and varied gatherings, took on a whole new identity and instead became a vibrant disco dance venue, the brainchild of Clare Cosson, as reported in Rye News in March.

The event was a sell-out success and those lucky revellers who took the plunge had a fantastic evening and went home exhausted and hungry for more.

If you think about it, where is there locally where young people (and those of a certain age) can safely enjoy a few drinks, let their hair down, have a good old bop about and ‘burn the boards’ to their favourite classic disco dance tracks?

Such was the success of the inaugural disco and by very popular demand, Clare decided to do it all again and last Saturday night (October 12) saw another sell out event which featured the sounds of the 80s and 90s with an amazing play list and lighting display (complete with obligatory glitter ball), courtesy of Ian from South East Wedding DJs.

Party goers were welcomed at the door with glow-in-the-dark wrist bands to get them in the mood, not that they needed any encouragement for as soon as they had crossed the threshold they were strutting their stuff and immediately took to the dance floor.

Soon after 7:30pm the dance floor heaved to the throng of party goers keen to show off their dance moves.

Soon after the doors opened the hall was comfortably packed, Pete and Ange from Fletchers kindly provided a cash bar and worked so hard all evening, Clare was a fantastic host and made sure everything ran to plan. The dancing continued non-stop and by 10:30ish it was time for all to start saying their goodbyes and filter off home.

The mood was one of elation (and exhaustion in some cases) as the revellers left the building, hot and tired but happy and delighted that they had made the effort to support such a great evening.

Clare has asked to pass on her thanks to all concerned but particularly to those who bought a ticket and made it all possible. At £12.50 it was great value and if you missed out then keep a close eye on @followthecallofthediscoballrye for updates, thankfully there are more discos planned next year in February/March plus a summer fling and  even a 2020 Halloween special.

Tickets will sell out, of that I’m certain. Don’t stand on the side lines and think to yourself ‘what if’? Get involved and have a go, good old-fashioned fun can sometimes be in short supply but here it is, on a plate and yours for the taking.
