Kate Metcalf of Rye will make her first paraglide descent next month from 10,000 feet – for charity. She will leap from the top of Mount Penken above Mayrhofen in the Austrian Alps to raise money for the Fishermen’s Mission in memory of Liam Moore. Liam, aged 20, from Kings Avenue, Rye, died in a road accident on February 19 this year.
Liam, best friend of Kate’s son Jordan, was a keen motorcyclist, a fisherman and a player for Rye Rugby Club. He also enjoyed socialising with his friends, walking his beloved dog and he regularly worked behind the bar at the Rugby club. He was loved by many and is greatly missed by his friends and family.
Kate of Ferring Close is a waitress at Rye’s River Haven Hotel and a valued committee member of Tilling Green Residents’ Association. She explained why she was doing the jump: “Liam was himself a fisherman and it was a big part of his life. The Fishermen’s Mission is the only national charity that works solely to support active and retired fishermen and their families by providing practical, financial and pastoral support.
“Fishing is dangerous and unpredictable. Hardship and tragedy are facts of everyday life in the our fishing industry. I just wanted to help to give something back to these people to help them continue their fantastic work.”
