Charlotte Owen, Conservation Officer at the Sussex Wildlife Trust, is asking people living in the county to “use their voice” for wildlife during the run-up to the General Election on December 12.
The Sussex Wildlife Trust thinks there are four key things that MPs can do to make a difference for nature’s recovery:
- Back an ambitious new Environment Act with legally binding targets and an independent watchdog to restore nature
- Introduce an Agriculture Bill that supports farmers for helping wildlife and creating a connected landscape
- Revive our marine environment through a network of protected areas and a new Marine Strategy to replenish our seas
- Accelerate action on the climate crisis including ambitious natural climate solutions that capture carbon in our peatlands, meadows and forests.
Charlotte said, “As election candidates go door-to-door, I would ask voters to let all parties know how much they care about wildlife, showing them that nature matters.
“These are the type of questions they could ask:
How will you and your party act decisively to tackle the crisis in the natural environment?
What will your party do to support farmers in contributing to nature’s recovery?
What will your party do to protect and revive our seas?
How will your party prioritise and fund nature-based solutions to the climate crisis?’
