St Mary’s church in Rye is preparing for another long weekend of music in May hosted by the Rye International Jazz and Blues Festival, and tickets can now be booked online at ryejazz.com.
The weekend kicks off with 6 Hands on Friday May 22, PP Arnold on the Saturday, Graham Gouldman’s (10cc) Heart Full of Songs on Sunday, and winds up on Monday May 25 with an afternoon concert at 3pm featuring Ronnie Scott’s All Stars. The preceding three evening concerts all kick off at 8pm.
On the first night John Williams of 6 Hands is joined by another guitar giant John Etheridge and classical guitarist and composer Gary Ryan so it should be a varied and colourful evening of solos, duos and trios.
Saturday features PP Arnold, London’s First Lady of Soul, who – after backing Ike and Tina Turner – was persuaded to go solo by Rolling Stone Mick Jagger – and never looked back.
Sunday night stars Graham Gouldman, who was a founding member of 10cc and a prolific songwriter and singer, so expect “Things we do for love” and many other favourites.
And the weekend winds up on Monday afternoon with Ronnie Scott’s All Stars featuring classic hits from the 60-year-old jazz club’s greatest performers.
