The George Hotel in Rye has got its roof back on – even if it is just a temporary one with canvas over the scaffolding – so work can start on remedying the effects of last summer’s damaging fire.
So the contractor hired to put up the temporary roof leaves and others will be hired for the very complex work required on restoring the historic building – no doubt with conservation experts from Rother District Council keeping a close eye on every move.
The scaffolding in both the High Street and Lion Street will therefore be in place for some time, but it is at least one big step forward.
