One of the main tourist attractions in Rye is, of course, Mermaid Street – and the Mermaid Inn, the cobbled street, the period houses, the history, intrigue and atmosphere attract tourists all year round. At the moment, though, Mermaid Street is closed to vehicles as UK Power Networks repair electrical faults deep beneath the cobbles.
What seemed to be an isolated incident to repair one of the electrical cables near The Mermaid Inn which had apparently exploded became more of a problem as, after this was repaired, more faults became apparent and the work continues under difficult circumstances in the historic street.
Ironically with local businesses in lockdown, disruption has been mitigated and hopefully before too much longer this famous and iconic cobbled street will be returned to what it was.
In the event of an emergency UK Power Networks can be contacted on 0800 7311 559 quoting Notice/Permit No. KZ 500 2023 9179.

We have to ensure that the cobbles are replaced correctly by properly trained people unlike so many bodged patches in other areas such as Conduit Hill.
