There was a mixed bag for Icklesham over the weekend, with the first team away to Sidley United, the veterans away to Sedlescombe Rangers Veterans, while the 2nd team’s match was postponed.
The 1st team went down 4-1 to Sidley United on Saturday (February 14). Trailing 2-0 at the break, Sean Baker pulled a goal back early in the second half to give the side hope, but two further goals for Sidley, including an own goal, were conceded.
In contradiction to the report on the East Sussex Football League website, the 2nd team game with Sandhurst II was not called off because Icklesham could not raise a side. Rather, the game was scheduled to be played at home in Icklesham, but the ground was unfit. Sandhurst’s pitch was available as their 1st team opponents had withdrawn from the League earlier in the week. While Icklesham would have been happy to switch the fixture, having such a young side means the team suffers from a lack of transport and it proved impossible to get all the players to Sandhurst at such short notice.
On a better note, the Icklesham Veterans defeated Sedlescombe Rangers Veterans 3-1 on Sunday, with two goals from Sacha Patterson and one from Martin Tytherleigh. With five games played, the team now lead the Hastings Veterans League.
