As Rye settles into the new Covid-19 tier 2 restrictions, popular pub the Ypres Castle Inn has announced that it will not be reopening this year.
In a statement on its website the independent historic pub, which hosts Rye’s largest beer garden, said: “When the current lockdown ends, Sussex will be in tier 2 of Covid restrictions. This means pubs can only re-open if they operate entirely as restaurants.
“I’m proud of our food, but I believe that pubs sacrifice their soul when they become restaurants. As such, the doors will remain closed for now.
“Have no fear: the Ypres Castle Inn will be back with bells on in spring, when visiting (and running) pubs can be a joyous thing once more!”

There is a marked difference between a pub that serves food, and a pub that doesn’t want you there if you’re just in for a drink or two.
We look forward to seeing you in the spring when the world might return to normal.

Amongst the endless ‘Gastro’ pubs serving pyramid splodges with ‘Jus’ learned from watching TV cooking programmes this is a most welcome cry of sanity. Pubs were the focal point of village or neighbourhood life, a place to meet and swap news. Thank heavens someone understands that still.
This pub is a role model for how a pub should be, excellent beer, a genuine welcome and good food if you want it. Kept us going with takeaway beer in the summer lockdown and many an evening in the garden when they reopened. Look forward to the Wipers opening again.
