Rye Mutual Aid is still here!

On Tuesday evening RMA had a zoom meeting between its central team and many of those in the 20 zones supported by the organisation. This was an opportunity to take stock of the latest Covid-19 developments, against a backdrop of rising infection in East Sussex (but still well below the national average) with over 100 patients with the virus in Sussex hospitals and Parliament voting for a move from lockdown to tier 2 in the run up to Christmas. There was much to discuss.

Calls for community support continue in most of the 20 zones from Camber to Westfield, and Rye to the Kent border, albeit in much smaller numbers than seen in the summer. In its work, RMA remains in close contact with all those involved with support in the community include our MP, local councils, sister organisations, coordinating bodies such as Rother Voluntary Action, the Rye Food Bank and suppliers.

When “shielding” finished before the last lockdown, many in the community with serious underlying health issues received a letter from the health secretary, noting their vulnerability and giving advice about measures to help with personal safety. Some of these are now seeking help and assistance from RMA.

The RMA website and Facebook pages continue to attract many seeking details of support as well as “signposts” to professional organisations helping those with issues such as mental health, benefits and housing.

In addition to community support, RMA is regularly reviewing its local contribution and is pressing on with several initiatives ranging from online cookery sessions (Cook Simple) in conjunction with the mayor of Rye, to its “12 kindness days of Christmas”, toy collections and support for the Rye Food Bank. Details of all these and more can be found on our website.

Although none of us quite know what the period after Christmas will bring, particularly after any relaxation of restrictions, most look forward to hearing more about the vaccination programme, and a return to some form of new normal in 2021. What we are determined to do is to record the experience of 2020 from the REACT and RMA view so that any lessons can be identified for those handling future pandemics or widespread civil emergencies.

  1. RMA is certainly greatly appreciated for the contribution made to Rye Food Bank and our community. RMA helps deliver emergency food to those who are unable to visit and are on hand to help in several other ways. Thanks so much everyone for all your efforts.
