The 2020 cricket season was like no other, and the winter offers no change to our ability to operate as a cricket club. But we are planning for 2021 with optimism with our AGM on January 31 at 7pm on Zoom.
The 2020 season was a sad time for Rye Cricket Club. We may have lost a season of cricket, but we also lost two friends of Rye Cricket Club. Last January our club president David Dee, who suffered a heart attack and passed away and in the spring we lost former player Ian Addy to a long-term illness. Sadly, we have not been able to mark their contribution to the club but in 2021 we have a number of plans to get cricket going again and to recognise our two friends.
Adult cricket will commence in mid-April, and the league season starts in early May. The club has retained the services of Dan Stickells as a professional for the 1st Xl, and he will also support coaching within the club.
We hope to host a cricket week commencing Aug 2 with a President’s Xl game, where we will formally commission a defibrillator in David Dee’s memory, with the support of David’s family. And on August 5 we hope to play Iden, where there will be an opportunity to remember Ian Addy.
MCC lined up for August
We will be playing the MCC in an all day game on August 3, and Linden Park on August 4. On Friday, August 6 we will be hosting a junior cricket day, with a junior presentation evening afterwards. Finally on the Saturday we hope to host a summer party in the pavilion.
We have winter coaching planned to commence on February 25, along with an Easter cricket camp, and the summer coaching programme starting on May 7. James Hamilton has developed a partnership between the club and Cranbrook School, and Rye will be supporting a coaching academy at the school.
These are clearly plans which are reliant on factors outside our control, but the groundwork has been done to enable them to happen.
