Message from Kelly Martin, Head of Rye Primary School

Our words can build up or tear down. As we go about our daily lives, I would like to encourage you to let your words bring light and life to others, be an encourager. It will make you feel better and the person receiving the kind words feel better. As I write we are in National lockdown#3 and I am struck more than ever by the importance of our words.
We are living in times when it is more important than ever to bring hope to others, to offer praise and encouragement. No one ever truly knows what ‘kind of day’ someone else has had; but we can choose to ensure that we choose words which bring them kindness and compassion. Tell someone you are grateful for them, tell someone they make your life richer by being in it, thank someone, compliment someone.
Unfortunately, we can become overwhelmed at times with negativity and negative words, both online and in the world around us. Let’s make it our mission to choose not to be a part of that. Choose to be a radiator to the people around you and not a drain. Choose to be a Tigger and not an Eeyore. That’s not saying you can never be sad, but sometimes you have to make a real effort to choose HAPPY!
It is not easy, particularly during these worrying times, but by talking to one another and connecting with one another we can help each other to feel happier, rather than bringing people down, raise them up! Life is hard at the moment, there is no denying that, choose to be part of the solution rather than the problem and speak words of hope and encouragement where you can.
Have people stopped listening?
Research actually suggests that if we constantly hear negativity the words become like a dripping tap, they get ignored because we get used to it. If you feel people have stopped listening to you, you may need to think about how you speak to them!
If you feel you have become a bit like that tap why don’t you say that 2021, will be the year that tap gets fixed and you may be surprised that the people around you become more attentive and happier too as they will hear a new sound; a sound which encourages them and builds them up!
Clownfish
The Clownfish parents, carers and children are embracing their home learning.
We have had lots of fantastic work from my Clownfish and we are very proud of each of them.
Dolphins
Dolphins have started their Frozen Kingdom learning Journey this week. We have had some amazing descriptive writing and some fantastic art work.
In our reading we have focused on using sentence stems to help us structure our answers using the lenses of setting, inference and checking.
Children have worked amazingly well in the school class bubble too.
Jellyfish
We couldn’t be any prouder than we are at the moment for all the fantastic effort and hard work that you are all doing. Our ClassDojo portfolios are over-flowing with work that we have thoroughly enjoyed looking through. We would also like to say a massive thank you to parents as well for being so supportive of the efforts of both the children and staff members in helping them to achieve in their online learning. Remember that we are always here and ready to help when you need it.
Minnows and Sardines
Minnows and Sardines have made a brilliant start to remote and blended learning this term. We kicked off our new topic Explorers and Experimenters with a winter theme. We have the features of this season in our environment and looked at colder environments in other parts of the world. We have used ice in experiments and artwork. The Minnows and Sardines really enjoy sharing news with each other and so we shared our Christmas news with each other on dojo via video messages, written reports, drawings and written accounts.
Years 3 and 4
All year 3/4 teachers are feeling immensely proud of the positive attitude the children are showing towards their learning. Every day we have the pleasure of seeing and reading high-quality work.
We have kicked off our topic about the Roman invasion of Britain from the comfort of our own homes this term. The children have created timelines and learnt about the intricate patterns of Roman mosaic floors. They created their own designs too.
We are also learning about sound in science. The children have done some investigations at home, learning about sounds becoming fainter when we move away from the source and the vibrations sound waves make.

Yes I agree lovely to read and to see what the children have been up too! On being positive and thoughtful it reminded me of Thursday morning when I was coming back from my early walk and was coming along Eagle Road. A little girl, I guess around 5/6 was walking with her mother hand in hand and we said the normal hello and I said ‘are you off to school that’s nice, have a good day’ and the little girl replied back ‘you too’. What a lovely response it made my day bless her!
Congratulations, Kelly, on keeping up morale in your school! You don’t only talk about positivity, being kind and engendering happiness, you actually do it and you lead by example. Keep up the good work.
