There has been much work undertaken at the Rye Cricket Salts recently to prepare for the 2021 Season with wicket rolling, sightscreens prepared, disabled toilet upgraded, more accessible stepped entrances, renewal of artificial wicket, and the installation of a public facing defibrillator – and all in preparation for a season of cricket.

This Saturday Rye Cricket Club get their season underway as they entertain Crowhurst Park in the first of three pre-season friendlies. The game starts at 1.00pm at the Rye Cricket Salts. The following Saturday Rye entertain Cowdrey, with the third fixture on Sunday May 2 v Linden Park.

The 2nd Xl start with a friendly on May 1 away to Hythe, and the 3rd XI also commence on May 1 with a League fixture against Crowhurst Park 4 XI.

Squad is strengthened

Rye Cricket Club enter the season with a strengthened squad and over the winter the club have managed to sign several new players for 2021.

Dan Stickels – Dan is a top order batsmen who has represented Kent 2nd XI. He has experience of winning the Kent Premier league with Hartley Country Club on several occasions. He is also an experienced coach and runs Southern Spartans for Kent County Cricket Club.

Reuben Collingwood – Reuben is a seam bowling all rounder, having previously played at Tenterden

Fred Smith – Fred is batsmen who was previously with Sissinghurst Cricket Club

Brent Hildebrand – Brent is young leg spin bowler with a lot of potential. He was part of the Southern Spartans area squad last year.

In addition Freddie Mackenzie has rejoined the club from Iden.

Turn out at the pre season practices have been very positive despite the finger numbing cold – but bobble hats have been de rigeur.

The start of the season will still see restrictions on the use of the Clubhouse, but it will be good to meet club members again, especially for socially distanced, al fresco hospitality.
