The following release was received by the town hall from Highways England at 4:43pm on Thursday, May 6. Just a few days before these disruptive works.
We’ll shortly be carrying out works to the drainage along the A259 in Rye. We will carry out these works overnight in two phases starting from Monday 10 May 2021 to Saturday 12 June 2021, when there is less traffic on the road.
Phase 1 – Harbour Road to Kettle O’ Fish Roundabout
Monday 10 May 2021 to Friday 14 May 2021 between the hours of 8pm to 6am
The closure points will be from Harbour Road to Kettle O’ Fish Roundabout
Diversion will be via; B2093, A2100, Maplehurst Road, A28, B2089 into Rye
Phase 2 – Kettle O’ Fish Roundabout to Skinners Roundabout
Monday 17 May 2021 to Saturday 12 June 2021 between the hours of 8pm to 6am.
The closure points will be from Kettle O’ Fish Roundabout to Skinners Roundabout
Diversion will be via; B2093, A28, B2088, A268, Rye Road to Skinners Roundabout.
Please note: These essential works are to alleviate flooding in the area and will generate noise through the night, for which we apologise in advance. The works are subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
For businesses, residents and car park permit holders within the closure, please make your way to the closure point to be escorted through the works. Please can you display the below permit in your car or save a photo of the permit to your phone to show our traffic management operatives. There may be a slight wait for the escort vehicle.
Access for emergency services will be maintained through the closures, where possible.

The sign from the contractors warning about these roadworks has been placed on the outer edge of the cobbled area, less than three metres from the zebra crossing. I have just seen a guy waiting to cross from The Strand to the sluice gate and three cars failed to see him because the signage is blocking their vision of the footpath. At least he waited. Some pedestrians just step out.
