Rye 1sts maintained their impressive form this season by returning to the top of the league, defeating Glynde I, who had previously occupied the top spot.
Rye won the toss and inserted Glynde. Rye’s bowlers got to work as Craig Pierce opened the bowling taking 3-27. He was then supported by Reuben Colingwood 4-21 and Harry Smeed 3-14. Only Archie Burrows 23 offered resistance as Glynde were dismissed for 121. Rye’s response was positive, as the first wicket fell on 68, Dan Stickells being dismissed for 38. Skipper Harry Smeed was then also dismissed for 38 and Rye wobbled as Louis Baron took 3-28. However Rye went over the winning line by 5 wickets in the 27th over.
Rye 2nds continue to struggle as they lost a fourth game in a row, on their trip to Glynde II. Skipper Scott Balcomb lost the toss again and Rye were invited to bat. Rye sped to 50-0 off 7 overs. The introduction of Tom Silvester 3-15 put a halt on the innings and Rye started to lose wickets regularly as the runs dried up. Darren Howard with 4-44 then saw Rye dismmised for 162 in the 40th over. The tail of Rye wagged through Colin O’Neill 20 not out and Freddie Mackenzie 27.
In reply an early run out promised much for Rye. However Darren Howard hit 50 not out, supported by Alastair Randall 48 and Josh Sudan 45 as Glynde raced to victory in 26 overs. Martin Blincow 1-16 the only success with the ball.
Rye 3rds travelled to face Crowhurst Park fourth team for their latest league fixture and on winning the toss elected to bowl first.
Crowhurst Park got off to a steady start before David Jempson (1-30 off 6 overs) and George Jempson (1-15 off 4 overs) claimed two quick wickets to leave the home side 32-2 including a well held catch from John Josiah at slip. Freddie Russell (11) having hit the previous ball for six was caught off the bowling of Toby Channon (1-26 off 5 overs). Opening batsmen John Lovell (53) was caught behind from the bowling of John Josiah (1-24 off 4 overs) as Crowhurst Park were 113-4. A fifth wicket partnership of 58 increased the score before Alex Stone dismissed Monty Watson (34) and went on to dismiss Likhith Mestha (43) to finish with figures of 2-33 off 4 overs. Colin Ayres finished on 23 not out as Crowhurst Park completed their allotted overs on 208-6.
Rye got off to a poor start in reply, both openers being removed in the first two overs with Chris Emery (1-4 off 5 overs) claiming one of the wickets. Toby Channon (20) and Johnny Broad (10) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as they were dismissed by Charlie Ferguson (2-11 off 8 overs) and Likhith Mestha (3-13 off 7 overs) respectively as Rye were all out for 64. Tom Ayres (3-10 off 5 overs) and Monty Watson (1-18 off 4 overs) were the other wicket takers. An impressive victory for Crowhurst Park.
This Saturday Rye 1sts travel to play Brighton & Hove 2nds, Rye 2nds host Crowhurst Park 2nds and Rye Thirds host Pevensey Thirds.
Last week Rye U11 A team lost a close match to Tenterden U11 A, whilst the Rye U11 B secured a win at Ashford Town C. This Monday the U11 A travel to Ashford Town A and the B team travel to play Mersham B.
