Absolutely chuffed

Steam engines of all shapes and sizes formed the largest line up of steam machines in the south east for the Weald of Kent Steam Rally at Little Engeham Farm, near Woodchurch last weekend.

After excessive rain had forced the postponement of the event for a week, Bill Giles, director of the rally said: “There was a tremendous amount of stress and hard work involved in the last-minute change of date, but I think it actually worked to our advantage. We had more people visit the show over the two days than we’ve ever had. It took us a little by surprise.”

The rally, which first ran in 2014 with 120 exhibitors, had more than 600 attractions for the massive crowds that came from all over the south east. With steam setting centre stage for the event, engines of all shapes and sizes were on display, along with classic cars, vintage motorcycles, agricultural vehicles, and a large deployment of military vehicles.

Over 30 full size steam engines and a large selection of scale engines took part in arena events, while a ‘Vintage Spirit’ marquee displayed current restoration projects.

Bill Giles added: “The show is all about giving the next generation an insight to how steam engines work, what it takes to restore them, and how they can help to keep the heritage of steam very much alive.”

At the end of two busy days, a smiling Bill Giles said: “It was a good weekend. The massive crowd of genuinely friendly people really made the show. I’m chuffed.”
