A winning streak for Rye Town FC over the last few weeks came to a disappointing end when Bexhill Town knocked them out of the ESFL Intermediate Challenge Cup on penalties.
In a tight, hard-fought game, the 1-1 scoreline at 90 minutes meant extra time, which saw both teams score again, so at 2-2 after 120 minutes of play, the dreaded penalty shoot-out loomed.
In true national team style, Rye Town floundered at the spot and were comfortably beaten 3-1.
The winning streak, which started with their first match of the season, has now extended to six league matches unbeaten, putting Rye Town firmly at the top of division one of the ESFL. Goals from Milton Miltiadou and Jules Phillips saw off Battle Town Reserves in a game the team made hard work of, but secured a flattering 3-1 victory.
An even bigger winning margin was the 9-1 victory over Sedlescombe Rangers Reserves. In a game where they could have been a comfortable four goals in front after 45 minutes, Rye were struggling, a goal behind. Whatever the manager said at half-time had a motivating effect and five goals from Jules Phillips (Yew Tree Stone man of the match), two from Sam Hasmer and one each for Craig Pierce and Tom Thomson, crushed the opposition.
The match against SC Pass Move was always going to be a hard-fought battle, but the plan to press hard from the start paid dividends with an early goal putting Rye on the road to a 3-0 success with goals from Liam Sayer and a brace from Jules Phillips. All agreed it was the best football the team had played all season and hopes are high that this winning streak in league games continues.
