Walking along Rye High Street on Wednesday, the swarm of contractors renovating the George Hotel seemed to be far more than normal, it was a real hive of activity from the roof down and I assume the major push before the planned reopening on May 1.
Decorators clung to ladders as they worked on the upper floor windows, down on the ground saws were sawing, drills were drilling and hammers hammering, hard hats and hi viz jackets were everywhere and with the weather at last being kind to us, all the opportunity was there to press ahead with the exterior.
Just as I passed, the metal fence panels were opened for a vehicle to access the site, an ideal opportunity to get a couple of photos to show you how things are looking behind the scenes. There is still a lot to do but everyone seemed very focused so hopefully the May target will prove to be a realistic date for the re-launch. We will endeavor to keep you posted.

It will be great for the town, businesses and visitors when The George opens it’s doors again! It must have been a dreadful time for the owners too! It’s only when something like this happens you realise the impact The George has on our community! Wishing The George all the best getting everything up to speed for the opening and it’s future!
It’s the same brown as the Apothecary shop and the craft further up the high street.
There was a fascinating paper included in the planning documents about the “archaeology” of the dozens of layers of paint on the George’s façade over the centuries—blues, greys, creams, and ochres, in addition to white. Most recently, before the fire, it was a light grey. This collection of browns is an authentic colour palette from (I believe) the early 19th century.

Is there any update on when The George will now be reopening? I understand they are taking bookings for June but their communication on social media is seriously lacking.
The George reopens on Wednesday May 18th – they are doing a countdown on Instagram so yesterday, with eight days to go, they showed a photo of eight wines.

I believe The George reopens on 18th May. (Stand to be corrected). I cannot wait to walk through the door. To me, Rye doesn’t feel fully alive without The George. Look forward to seeing everyone again!
