On Easter Monday, April 18 in accordance with ancient tradition, the new mayor of Winchelsea, David J Merrifield, was installed.

The swearing in of the mayor took place in the Court Hall, as tradition demands and the rest of the ceremony was conducted, for the first time, in St. Thomas’s Church before approximately 180 guests and residents.  Among the distinguished guests were the lord lieutenant of East Sussex, the high sheriff of East Sussex, our member of Parliament, Sally-Ann Hart and the Rt worshipful mayors of three head ports of the Confederation of Cinque Ports.

The ceremony was followed by the mayor’s reception for the invited guests and a further reception took place in the evening for residents of the town.

The new mayor would like to thank all who helped make the day a resounding success.
