Traffic on the A259 will be affected from Saturday, June 4 for a maximum of 18 months by the Environment Agency’s flood prevention works on the east bank of the river Rother near Rye’s Monkbretton Bridge.
The National Highways Agency’s temporary instructions could include speed restrictions, an overtaking ban, and daytime traffic lights (between 8am and 6pm) and there will be traffic signs, but no diversions are planned.
These restrictions are required so the contractors can work on the flood alleviation and associated works.
Because Monkbretton Bridge is very narrow, two way traffic is sometimes impossible, with wide vehicles causing delays which can be lengthy at the busiest holiday periods on this coastal road, and roadworks may exacerbate this problem in coming weeks.

The Eastern Bank of the Rother was supposed to have started in 2019, now we see the environment agency wishes to start on Saturday 4th June, Jubilee weekend surely this should be suspended till after that weekend, which could be one of the busiest of the year, sadly it seems not much thought when coming up with this date, and the chaos it will cause.
