Last Saturday, July 30, saw the Rye Bowls Club hosting their annual Tournament, on the Salts green.
Sponsored by The Mermaid Inn, this annual event attracted 16 teams from as far afield as Hunton (Kent), Bexhill, Ninfield and Bethlem (Beckenham).
The weather held fair and the matches played throughout the day, provided one of those very English summer events, as can be seen from the photographs. Bowls on the Salts always attracts attention and several visiting tourists stopped by, to enjoy the spectacle and ask about the game.
One enthusiastic couple from Amsterdam had stopped off in Rye, on a whim, and said that the tournament was an unexpected and interesting surprise, and that Rye was fantastic!
The winners of the tournament were Guestling, with runners up being Gullivers (Bexhill) and third place taken by Westfield. Prizes were presented by Judith Blincow, owner of The Mermaid Inn, who is also President of Rye Bowls Club.
Rye Bowls Club is actively looking for new members, of all ages and welcomes enquiries from those who would like to give it a try. There are three ‘roll-ups’ each week, during the season, when members and those wanting to have a go can just turn up. So, if you are interested come along on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, at 10:30am.
There have already been several new members signing up this year, so why not join them. If you can’t make these ‘roll-up’ days, just phone the Club Secretary on 01797 223301/07920 328606, or the Club Captain on 01797 223301.
