Since Rye News began eight years ago we have seen enormous culture change and a shifting political landscape. Issues such as the rise of nationalism, trust in journalism and the choices our political leaders make have affected us all on a national and local level. With a new leader of the Conservative party we are living through uncertain times and a divided society.
This year The Rye Arts Festival and Rye News have combined forces to bring two guest speakers who are at the coalface of news and journalism. We anticipate that both talks will lead to lively discussions and we have allowed time for questions at the end so that you can join in the debate.
Gavin Esler
Award winning television and radio broadcaster, novelist and journalist Gavin Esler (who came to the Festival three years ago to talk about Brexit) will be returning to talk about How United is our United Kingdom? The Financial Times says of his book How Britain Ends – English Nationalism and the Re-birth of Four Nations: “Esler’s stories of people in power and the compromises they are forced to make, shows that he understands the political beast better than anyone.”
Nick Davies
Our earlier article The Challenges of Journalism gives details about award winning investigative journalist Nick Davies who will explore the breakdown of the public’s trust in journalism. During his 40 year career he also wrote six books, his most recent being Hack Attack which details Murdoch’s interference in government as well as the crime in his newsrooms.
