Choose fun!

As an entertainer I believe it is important that people should have the option for fun, particularly in the current climate of constant misery. I also believe that people should be able opt not to have fun- should they so choose.

But I take umbrage with folk who knowingly own or live (but mostly those who own) properties in the vicinity of existing bars and venues then rent out these what were once homes, for profit, to unwitting holidaymakers under the pretence that life in a rural idyl is always super quiet.

These unwitting holidaymakers then complain to the owners of these homes, who, at risk of getting a bum review (god forbid), in turn complain to the local venues providing much needed fun in these dark times- often venues which have provided this service for generations.

Polite Notice

Obviously I also recognise that some people are unable to have fun, instead preferring to spread misery and expect rural towns to be dead. Then there are those who are more preoccupied with making a quick buck for their out-of-town pocket, at the expense of hard- working, and maybe even not so hard-working locals, who just want to have a good time.

Sure, rent out your places, suffocate local folk from an affordable housing market for your own gain, but at least be honest in your advertising on Airbnb or wherever. Tell them how old the buildings are, how thin the walls are and let them know how vibrant Rye really is. Avoid the hassle – maybe capitalise on how car free their break can be, but for goodness’ sake let those who live locally have the fun that they have always and rightly deserved. Lord knows – these folk could even join in the fun…

  1. Writing as the Proprietor of The Brewery Yard Club, I’d just like to clarify that the image used in this article is a stock image and not our sign. Please be assured, it is not displayed in our venue. (And that is not our terrible carpet!)
I have some very supportive neighbours who have contacted me with their concern about the article and so I’d just like to clear things up.
Timberlina’s act is our most successful event – selling out every month. Timberlina writes from their own frustrated perspective and is not speaking on our behalf. This frustration is a result of a particular neighbour who has taken issue with the drag show. The author of this article is being their authentic self and speaking from the heart, which here at the BYC, we embrace.

  2. I must agree with Timberlina, Jane Brook before you bought the old British legion club, everytime we put music on there was complaints about the noise, sadly all the cheap properties in Rye close to public houses, are being bought by the Airbnb brigade, but in their quest to get their properties full, they forget to tell their guests that the pub next door does live music at weekends, and then wonder why their guests complain.

    • Since the British Legion days John we’ve had to carry out noise attenuation works plus we have a noise limiter and there are all manner of restrictions to our licence to help combat noise nuiance. Anyone who know us, knows we try very hard and have good relationships with the vast majority of our neighbours with holiday homes who are actually really lovely and super-supportive. The positives greatly outway the negative reviews.

  3. What an absolutely ridiculous notice, why not just put “feel free to make a noise and abuse the locals if asked to be quite”
And as for there having always been noise when people left pubs, that’s not strictly true either, I’m not saying we were angels back in the day but we weren’t in the same league as today.
And don’t get me started on the British Legion Club, those that know will know.

    • Hi Tony. I think this image was from a working man’s club in the midlands years ago. I think any licencing authority would have something to say about such a careless message to the community these days!

  4. This is such an odd dilemma. I know lots of people who regularly or occasionally visit Rye. One of the massive plus points is our nightlife which they cant really believe until they are here. We are blessed with brilliant local bands, playing often for free in our pubs and clubs. The Big Bingo Show at the BYC is something I have been going to for years – it was in London before it moved to Rye. I have taken so many people to that – they say oh thats not our cuppa, but OK we will go if you insist. And then they become regulars because they have had the time of their lives. I really think that anyone who has an holiday rental anywhere near the BYC should reserve tickets for Big Bingo on the first Friday of the month for their guests. The guests might be oh well whatever, maybe lets go and have a looksee, but I can assure you, the vast majority of them will be overjoyed and amazed. And they will no doubt recommend to friends and come back themsleves.

  5. Well said Timberlina! Our coastal communities are at risk of being torn asunder by second homeowners and air b&b’s, who appear to be amongst the minority who prefer to frequent the chi chi craft beer establishments. The majority of us thankfully still enjoy to sup in real pubs.
