Jorge Lewinski, the foremost photographer of Artists in Britain, Jorge Lewinski.
He was born in 1921 in Lwow, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine) and survived Russian occupation, internment, and forced labour in Siberia. He moved to Britain in 1942, becoming a professional photographer in 1968. He also taught photography at the London College of Printing and later founded his own School of Photography in South London. He photographed over 300 leading British contemporary artists during his career. A selection of his portraits will be looked at together with the contribution these artists made.
In 2005, the Royal Academy published ‘Portrait of the Artist: Photographs by Jorge Lewinski’.
