A pressing engagement

Rye Community Garden staged a wonderfully productive community effort outside Jempson’s last Saturday. It was a lovely autumn morning, warm enough for shirt sleeves and t-shirts.

Quite a crowd turned up to make some juice

From 9am to 12 noon they were chopping madly and pressing apples from the community garden as well as many donated by people from all around the area. Graham Ellis (compost guru of the community garden) reckons that in that time 30/40 delicious litres were produced. How do I know it’s delicious? I tasted it and took some home. Anyone who arrived with a bottle was able to take juice away though Graham made sure there was enough left for the hard workers at the end of the morning. A few people donated money which brought in about £79 to go towards keeping up the community garden.

This year their equipment was borrowed from Hythe Environmental Community Group but next year the hope is that enough money can be raised to buy one which will be owned and stored by the community garden group but can be used by other interested parties.

All strength to their collective elbows.
