Add together:

A measure full of beautiful surroundings
A twist of sunshine
A barrel or two or three of brilliant beers
A volume of fun people
And then add into the mix an ampleness of David Roder, Tim Morgan and team
Stir well and sit back as the ingredients all mix well together
Success follows

On Saturday, October 22 David and Tim welcomed their first guests to their microbrewery in Playden, and there were plenty of guests all eager to see the new premises and taste the beers, ciders and wines on offer. Soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages were available too.

Neville and Phil, regulars at The Waterworks in Rye, were happy propping up the bar and chatting. They told me that they were proud to be known for often being the first customers through the door. They helped with the painting and decorating as volunteers and were undeniably pleased to be associated with the new venture. They told me: “We want to see him make a success of the brewery as he has done with the pub in town. We will support him all the way.”

Another couple, Nick and Claire, who were enjoying the new space, told me what drew them to the Waterworks. Nick said: “It has a very eclectic clientele; you never know who you are going to meet. It’s all about going out and meeting a nice bunch of people. I am reading a book at the moment called The Social Distance between us by Darren McGarvy He talks about social proximity. He suggests that we normally go out and find someone to talk to that you feel comfortable with who shares your point of view and values. But he stresses therefore you don’t learn anything new. If you go out to David’s pub you sit next to someone you have never met before who may have a totally different view of life from you – you learn something new. We are here today to give him our full support and to meet new people.”

I met Peter and June Morgan, married for sixty-four years, and asked them how often they

visited the Waterworks in Rye. They laughed and said: “Too often!” When I asked them what the secret was of such a long and happy marriage Peter replied: “Saying thank you and sorry, one after the other.” They liked the Waterworks: “It is the atmosphere created by David and his team. It’s so friendly and you meet different people each time you go. We are looking forward to the same atmosphere up here at the brewery. On top of all that, it is the cheapest and the best in town.”

Steve and Jeff said: “It’s nice to have another local pub you can walk to. It is good to support local businesses.”

Redmond, who did all the electrics, said it was like home from home and he was looking forward to the production of new brews.

Becks summed it up: David and Tim have created a melting pot where time, place and people of all ages mix, and it works.
