To the sound of thunder, a sudden late afternoon hailstorm this week sent people scurrying home, writes Kenneth Bird. Hailstones more than one centimetre in size rattled down in the space of half an hour, creating an apparent wintry scene in May in one of Rye’s historic cobbled streets. And the storm ended as quickly as it had begun. Family cats emerged from their hiding places, and normal life resumed. Incredibly, tender plants and seedlings in the garden seemed quite undamaged.
