Your body is your instrument, tune it well

Of all the health giving experiences I have enjoyed here in Rye, I am especially grateful to multi-gifted Dr Rebekah Gilbert. Many Rye News readers will know of her as Rye’s former mayor (2020-2022) who currently serves our town as mayoress to the current mayor of Rye.

Dr Rebekah Gilbert and companion Sophie

Dr Rebekah Gilbert is a talented professional singer, graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, with over 30 years’ experience as a concert soloist in the UK and abroad. She currently sings and manages Rye Bay Crew, a diverse group of musicians available for corporate events, weddings, special birthday or anniversary celebrations, and bespoke themed events, from popular shanties and songs of the sea, to Bond Nights, or the full classical Last Night of the Proms.

What readers may know less about Rebekah is that she practices clinical sports and remedial deep tissue massage. Her work addresses postural issues, gait assessment, workplace wellbeing and ergonomics consultancy, and general muscular aches and pains, and she offers wonderful relaxation and aromatherapy de-stressing treatments too.

As a singer Rebekah knows her body is her instrument, and to tune it well you need to understand anatomy, physiology and function. She has been practicing in the field of wellness (including healthy eating) since 2006, and believes “age is just a number” if you look after yourself well. To stay happier and healthier for longer a positive mental attitude, nutrition, sleep and rest, good posture, regular exercising and social activity all need a holistic approach. Rebekah’s coaching and consultancy work, both for individuals and teams, aims to deliver advice on good mental and physical health based on this holistic approach to understanding your body better.

I had some post-surgery soft tissue damage years ago and have been grateful to learn more about how to treat the effects of this in my later years from Rebekah’s experience. Her ability to get to the crux of knots and aches, and concluding her treatment with relaxing circular movements of hot stone massage, plus valuable information and advice about how I can relieve muscle tension and pain at home, are working. I’ll be back!

  1. I endorse everything you say, Susan . We are so fortunate to have someone of this calibre available to sort out our aches and pains with massage (and good do-able exercises) as well as soothing away our stresses with wonderful aromatherapy, Indian head massages and….the heated stones!
