Nigel James has been raising funds for different charities for over seventeen years and this year he decided to walk from Selsey to Rye Harbour and collect donations for the RNLI along the way. He sports an RNLI flag and a collection bucket and talks to those he passes on the way, raising awareness of the work that the charity does on a daily basis.
Nigel explained that he has so much respect for the volunteer crews that are on duty 24/7 and never complain when their pagers go off, even if they are enjoying a family Christmas lunch. He said that all he has to do is to put one foot in front of another whereas the crew can often find themselves in treacherous weather and dangerous conditions.
Nigel, who lives in Doncaster, began his walk on Wednesday April 5. He called at the RNLI stations along the coast: Selsey, Littlehampton, Shoreham, Newhaven, Eastbourne, Hastings and ended at Rye Harbour.
He said: “I have always given to the RNLI I am a great believer in doing things that help people. In my book the crews are really heroes. They risk their lives to save others, so I want to help them do that by providing funds. Every one of them deserves the George Cross.”
