Alex Burt, a caravan owner at Rye Harbour Holiday Park, had the idea of celebrating the anniversary of VE Day on May 8. Attired in his kilt and clutching his bagpipes he explained a little about how the idea had come about. He joined the army in January 1962 as a fifteen year-old boy soldier and served twenty-five years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and VE Day has always been a special day for him.
He explained that he learnt to play the bagpipes at the same time and enjoys it very much especially on important occasions.
He approached the management staff at the caravan park and they were thrilled with the idea. Katie Shippley, holiday homes sales manager from the park team, informed everyone on site and there was a great turnout. She told me: “We are thrilled to be putting on this small service to honour all those who gave so much. It is good for the park as it brings everyone together with a common goal and it shows how much people still care.”
Jill Halpin read a moving poem and Alex played the Last Post and God Save the King. After the service there were refreshments in the clubhouse.
