Rye had a winning weekend…almost, as Rye 1sts and 3rds enjoyed victory, whilst the 2nds succumbed to defeat off the penultimate ball of their match.
Rye 1sts hosted Glynde 1sts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. In the midst of a heatwave, prior to the start it rained and that may have had an impact on the pitch. Glynde lost the toss and were invited to bat by Rye Skipper Harry Smeed. Rye struck early through openers Craig Pierce 1-29 and Tobias Farrow 2-13. Glynde were 39-3 and going slowly. The screw was turned by Chanuka Dilshan with 4-9 off 9 overs and James Smeed 2-26. Glynde eventually finished 111 all out in 33 overs. Opener Matthew Blunt carried his bat for 47 not out.
Rye equally found batting difficult. Skipper Harry Smeed hit 37 early on, but Rye wobbled on 53-5 and 81-6, but Tobias Farrow 40 not out and Steve Stickells 10 not out, saw Rye to a 4 wicket victory and 4th place in Division 3 East. This Saturday the 1sts travel to Rottingdean, who lie in 3rd place.
The 2nds travelled to Seaford 2nds on Saturday. Due to a late drop out, they travelled with an inexperienced team with two Under 15s. Rye were invited to bat and made a positive start as Spence Fielding hit 34, and despite a lull in scoring due to accurate bowling, Rye’s batsmen chipped in, as Ellis Hatter hit 33, Mark Cook 29 and useful late innings knocks as Rye reached 187-5 off 40 overs.
In reply, Seaford never got away from the Rye bowling. Liam Hornsby hit 64, but Martin Blincow 2-22 and Blake Rouse 2-31 removed the bulk of the innings. However, Tim Page hit 38 not off 30 balls and with Jack Connors 30 riding their luck, to see Seaford home by 3 wickets with just a ball to spare. A really positive performance by the 2nds. This Saturday they host Glynde 2nds in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn.
The 3rds maintained their excellent season with another win at Icklesham. Playing Sidley 2nds, they dismissed them for 52. Anthony Bradnum 4-6 started the slide, then Sam Bradnum 2-9 and Oscar Wincott-Stone 2-13, ensured the innings finished in 32.3 overs. Sam Bradnum 17 and Will Morfitt 19 took Rye close, but 15 year old Matthew Best, 14 not out, saw Rye home by 6 wickets in just 18 overs. This Saturday the 3rds will be looking to maintain 2nd spot in their division, at home to Pevensey 3rds.
