Please join us for an afternoon of poetry, painting and conversation with artists Sally Cole, Peronel Barnes and Dr Amy Pierce-Miller on Saturday, July 22 from 4pm until 6pm.

The summer exhibition ‘Works on Paper’ at Rye Art Gallery is a cacophony of colour, unboundaried landscapes and lines etched in memory. The landscapes that Sally depicts are so heavily ingrained in her psyche that working within the environment or in the studio has no relevance as each depiction has become so recognisable. From Pembrokeshire, Ireland, Hastings and New Zealand, the geology, coast and sky are represented in familiar but startling ways.

For this exhibition the pieces are free and have been released from the frame, further inviting the spectator to grasp where the land ends and engage with the landscape that has escaped.

The mark making in these new works are bold and have the sublime characteristics that are expected from landscape painting, whilst the charcoal, inks (in some cases Irish soot) add more currency as these represent the persistent breaks in the land.

The invitation to immerse yourself with unrestrained blues are contrasted with the acidic lemon that creates a wild vision of rasping wind meeting dense waves.

We invite viewers to take in this unique opportunity and to engage with Sally’s new ambitious project of freeing the landscape from the frame.

Refreshments will be included, please email us to book your place and purchase tickets which are priced at £12. Friends of Rye Art Gallery go free, but still need to book.
