The hardest part of taking part in a horticultural show is timing. The bit where you have to get your “three courgettes” to grow to the exact same size for show day or your “heaviest squash” to put on enough pounds before the big day. Or worse, it might be that your prize “dahlia – 1 specimen bloom” gets munched on by earwigs the night before the big event. As organisers we are very sympathetic to these problems and understand that veg, fruit and flower entries are often very last minute decisions.
Nonetheless, it is much easier to plan other classes well ahead of time, especially the baking and preserves section whilst the photography and handicraft entries are almost certainly underway by now.
Photographs of “A special corner of a garden”, “A Rye view” and “Our feathered friends” are probably already on your phone or camera. These are just three of the image classes this year.
The cookery section contains 10 different classes so there is something there for almost everyone. We are really looking forward to seeing what clever combinations are in the “Cocktail sausage roll with an interesting addition” this year. It was very strongly and imaginatively competed in 2022.
Important things to remember
The deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday, August 18.
The entry form and full details, classes, rules etc are all online at www.ryeflowerandvegshow.co.uk
It is meant to be fun. A surprising number of first-time entries go home with prizes and certificates.
