This year’s jazz and blues festival ended on a funky note in St Mary’s Church, which played host to a well known band popular in the 80s and 90s, The Brand New Heavies.
Playing to a full crowd, the band had everyone on their feet, grooving and swaying to their acid jazz and funk style music. It was a wall of sound, sometimes overwhelming, but the full church pews seemed to appreciate the energy of the music. Balfour wine was flowing (a bit too much ending on the church floor, sadly) and there was a real party feel. Perhaps there was an even more celebratory atmosphere as it was the last act of the festival.
Ian Bowden, the festival’s organiser, and all his team of volunteers, once again made Rye proud of this popular annual event. I’m already looking forward to next year’s line up.
