Rye Homes for Ukraine

With the war in Ukraine grinding on, ministers here are in talks with a view to extending the Ukraine refugee (guest) scheme.

More than 184,000 people have come to the UK under two schemes, Homes for Ukraine and the Ukraine Family Scheme, which allow Ukrainians fleeing the war to live and work in the UK for three years.

18 months on from the schemes’ launch in March 2022, there is no clarity from government as to whether there will be extensions and if so, what the terms will be. However, it is expected that Ukrainians will be allowed to stay for longer.

In Rye District there remain fifteen family Ukrainian groups. The “Rye hub” uses social media for advice and support. Monthly meetings are arranged for the mostly mothers and some children. The menfolk are at home in Ukraine, committed to the war effort.

Some Ukrainians came to Rye in Spring 2022 with harrowing back stories but locally they have found friendship and kindness with host families. Many have secured jobs; children are in education.

After 18 months, some hosts are now seeking relief and guest moves are being arranged. More hosts are needed. For anyone prepared to offer accommodation, please contact the Rye hub to discuss. The easiest way is via Rye Town Council, which will forward contacts.
