RNLI Rye Harbour Lifeboat Station’s pagers went off three times over this weekend, September 9 and 10 September because three children had been reported lost in three separate incidents on Camber Beach which was packed because of the wonderful weather.
Lucy Hill was on the crew for one of the shouts which was her first as boat crew. She has worked diligently through her modules since she joined the crew a year ago. All that hard work paid off and she was able to put all the skills learnt into practice.
All the children were found safe and sound and reunited with their anxious parents.
Advice from the RNLI when on a beach with children:
“Children are safest when supervised. As soon as you get to the beach, agree a meeting point in case of separation. If the beach runs a children’s safety scheme, using wristbands or tickets, take part. They’re free and they work. If you are on an RNLI lifeguarded beach, pay a visit to the lifeguard hut on arrival and they will be able to tell you if there is a scheme running on that beach. If a child does go missing: calmly check your surroundings first, ensuring other children remain monitored; contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed; let all searchers know once the child is found.”
