Here’s a roundup of the other stories making the news in Rye this week, and a look ahead to some of this weekend’s events.

A259 roadworks return

One of the main roads into Rye will be closed overnight during the week for the next fortnight. The A259 will be shut to traffic between the junction with Camber Road and the bridge over the river Rother on weeknights from Thursday, October 12 until Wednesday, October 25. Diversions will be in place between 8pm and 6am.

Peter Phillips from National Highways says the latest closures finish off work which began earlier in the year. “After a short-term pause so we weren’t disturbing journeys during the summer holidays, we will be restarting our resurfacing scheme on the A259. We understand that living near roadworks isn’t easy, but we will be doing all we can to minimise disruption and noise while we complete our work.”

Live traffic information can be found here.

Cashless carparks get the go ahead

As expected, council run car parks in Rye will go cashless from March next year. Rother District Council’s cabinet meeting on Monday, October 9 approved plans to make visitors to their car parks use contactless payment or the Ringo app. In Rye that means you won’t be able to pay with coins at these car parks: Gibbet Marsh, Lucknow Place, Bedford Place, Rye Sports Centre, the Strand and Cinque Ports Street. The council made the decision to save money on coin collection, as well as cutting their carbon footprint.

Dog beach ban latest

At the same meeting, during an emotional discussion, the council voted to approve changes to the public places where dogs are allowed. Rye News hopes to have a full report in next week’s edition.

Something for the weekend

Rye’s very own town crier Paul Goring leads the way as Dat Brass Band takes to the streets.

On Saturday, October 14, Rye hosts the 70th National Town Crier Championship. There will be a procession around Rye starting at the town hall at 10:20am, led by our own town crier Paul Goring. The competition itself takes place in the Gun Gardens between 10:30am and 4pm, breaking for lunch at the Mermaid at 12:30pm.

Also on Saturday, there’s apple pressing in Jempson’s car park in Rye between 10am and 2pm, organized by the Rye Community Garden.

On Sunday, October 15, classic cars will be cruising through Rye again. A convoy of British and American classic and custom cars will parade through the town and along the high street starting at 2:30pm, with a chance to have a closer look at the cars in the station car park from 3pm.

Training exercise at Rye Fire Station

Still with Sunday, it’s the Rye Fire Station open day between 11am and 3pm. The team are promising demonstrations, tours and a chance to meet our local firefighters.

  1. Motorbikes on the Strand – do we know when this happened?
The bikers have always squeezed through, to use the tarmac area, but this is taking the Michael.

  2. Totally agree Ian, I will try and email environment agency, TOWN HALL, and try to get them to put a sign up. Very arrogant behaviour. It probably was one of their meeting of all bike fractions. Not an excuse. That blue box need moving.

  3. Talking about the Strand, toilets, and the gungarden ones, where are our visitors including bikers going to spend a penny, when Rother district council close them for the winter, in November.
