The main road into Rye Harbour is pitted with potholes which are deemed not deep enough to be considered for remedial action.
However, in the side turning of Tram Road residents are faced with another problem. The road is unadopted; it is not maintained by the Highway Authority under the Highways Act 1980. The road has large craters in it caused by the number of vehicles travelling up and down. The shingle is sent flying and banks up creating dangerous ridges. If you have a 4×4 with high clearance that does not pose too much of a problem but many other cars can find themselves ‘grounding’ as they negotiate the road, in the worst cases taking off their exhausts and being stranded.
Community spirit, not alcohol, played centre stage at a street ‘party’ in the Harbour. No-one lays claim to own the road so every so often we call for a ‘street party’ with a difference. The suggested code of dress is scruffy and instead of bringing a bottle or a plate of food you are expected to turn up with mattocks, pick-axes and rakes.
Sunday, February 4 was the chosen date for the party and the turn-out was terrific. Young and old alike pitched in and flattened the offending humps. One small child thought the puddles were for playing in and had a ball.
It was a real team effort from the Tram Roaders and community spirit ran high. Sheila Caister provided refreshments at the end and people had a chance to catch up with each other.
