Do you know this man?

Man wanted for ID theft by Sussex Police

Sussex Police are looking to identify this man in connection with the theft of a car in Rye on Tuesday, January 2. A grey Volkwagen Golf was stolen from Martello Place between 3pm and 3:10pm. The police are linking the theft to an incident in Iden when a mobile phone, car keys, and driving licence were stolen from a van.

Officers would like to speak to this person as part of their enquiries. Anyone with any information, CCTV, or doorbell footage, is asked to report it online or via 101, quoting 903 of 02/01.

Nearby on Military Road, number plates were stolen from a car on Friday night, February 9. Crime reference CAD: 621 10/02/24.

Graffiti

Graffiti in the toilets near the station

The gents toilets near Rye station have reopened after repairs. They were closed earlier this month after graffiti was sprayed inside between Sunday and Monday, January 28 and 29. The Sussex Police crime reference is 0070 31/01

The graffiti attack was part of an increase in antisocial behaviour that also included damage to property, theft and harassment, and led Sussex Police to increase patrols around Rye and Rye Harbour.

Time to talk

Rye’s town meeting is on Wednesday, March 6 at the community centre on Conduit Hill with a chance to meet local councillors from the Rye, Rother and East Sussex Councils. As well as hearing from the mayor, there’s an update on the leisure centre, neighbourhood plan and Rye Heritage Centre.

Rye walks

Carolyn Gould’s latest book

Local author Carolyn Gould has just published her third book My Walks in Pictures. It’s a collection of beautiful photographs taken during her walks around Rye, including this shot of the iconic red roofed hut at Rye Harbour. Carolyn uses this precious time to inspire, refresh and strengthen herself. Her email is walkingandwellbeing@gmail.com or via Instagram @walkingandwellbeing

Talking scallops

Tim Anderson

Scallop week kicks off unusually tomorrow with a joint collaboration between Rye Bay Scallop Week and Rye Arts Festival. The cook, writer, broadcaster, and 2011 MasterChef winner Tim Anderson will be in conversation at the launch event. His latest book on Japanese cooking focusses on Hokkaido, the country’s second largest island, and his talk will look at how people there cook sea scallops.

It starts at 2:30pm and takes place at The Mermaid Inn – not the community centre as previously advertised. More details and a full festival listing here.

Real Bread Week

Staying with a culinary theme, this weekend also sees the beginning of Real Bread Week which promotes authentic bread and encourages you to bake the real thing. Conveniently for non-bakers, Rye is the home of the most exceptional real sourdough bread to be found for miles. The Lazy Bakery is at The Whitehouse on the High Street @lazybakery. For Focaccia lovers, head to Tillingham on Sundays @tillinghamwines

  1. You have to wonder at the mentality of people that derive such pleasure in trashing toilets. The womens toilets near the station have also been affected. What impression does this give to visitors to our town? Toilets at both Winchelsea Beach and Pett Level remain closed, which is a huge problem for walkers, the elderly, families with children and visitors to the area. It is vital that some toilet facilities remain open even if it is just a disabled toilet as is the case in Winchelsea, in order that we can all enjoy our wonderful villages and coastal areas.
